How to decorate with rugs
The rug, the tray for our furniture, is essential in our homes. It is an important element for a complete interior and is of great importance for a warm and cozy impression while also fulfilling an important function. It keeps our feet warm during cold winter days, serves as a barrier against the cold draft from the floors, and effectively reduces noise.
Find a rug that frames your home and creates a sense of wholeness. In our rug guide, we give you our best tips on how to decorate with rugs.
How to choose the right size
It can be tricky to visualize how big the rug should be. A simple trick to use is masking tape. Tape the desired size of the rug to the floor. Then measure the taped area, it will give you an indication of what size you need. Choose the size that is closest to your preferred measurements. And remember, it is almost impossible to choose a rug that is too big, while it is common to choose a rug that is too small!
A light rug reflects the light and makes the room visually larger, while a dark rug shrinks the space.
Rug for the dining room
Decorating with a rug under the dining table immediately creates a softer feeling and is a nice way to frame the dining area.
Under the dining table, it is important to have a generous rug. A good benchmark for the size of the rug is that your chair should remain on the rug when you pull it out to sit down at the table. As a test, pull out your dining chair, it indicates the appropriate width of the rug and where you should put the tape on the floor if you want to visualize the size of the rug for yourself. The length of the rug should be at least 10-20 cm longer than the length of the dining table.
For the dining area, it can be beneficial to have a more durable rug, such as one that is tightly woven and short-piled, making it easier to clean from dirt and food residues.
Rug for the living room
In the living room it is nice to have a soft rug that is comfortable to walk on.
The main rule when choosing size is that the rug should not be smaller than the width of the sofa. A good benchmark is that you should have about 10-20 cm outside each side of the sofa. But if you have even more, it is only good for the expression! The rug is the tray for your sofa and your furniture.
It will be extra stylish if both the sofa and the armchairs can fit together on the rug. Otherwise, it is sufficient if the front feet of the sofa and the armchairs are placed about 20 cm into the rug. This means that your rug will stay firmly on the floor and you get more rug to walk on.
Rug for the bedroom
Tired feet deserve a soft start of the day, the rug works wonders. Depending on the space of the bedroom, there are two options.
A smaller rug is easy to place, dust and wash. By placing a narrow rug on each side of the bed, you create a cozy feeling. Colour coordinate the rug with your bed linen or curtains for a unified look.
If you choose a larger rug under the bed, your feet will land correctly no matter Where you step out of the bed. It also frames the bed and adds extra character and flair to the bedroom. Make sure that the mat is wide enough, a common rule is usually at least 30 cm to spare on each side.
Rug for the hallway
When choosing a rug for the hallway, it's a good idea to think practically and look for a durable rug that can withstand wear and dirt.
In rooms that are more exposed to dirt you may want to shake and dust the rug more frequently, a smaller size is more practical. It can also be advantageous to rotate the rug from time to time to even out wear and unevenness.
Rug for the bathroom
Bathrooms, often with tiled floors, tend to be perceived as cold despite the common underfloor heating many bathrooms have access to. A simple solution is a bath mat that visually enhances the bathroom and gives it a sense of softness. And on top of that it takes care of our feet! Colour coordinate with your towels to make a great visual impression in the bathroom.
Make the rug stay in place
An anti-slip rug keeps the rug in place and evens out irregularities under the rug. Himla's anti-slip rug can be used on all types of floors. The thickness of about 2 mm also makes the rug softer to walk on. The anti-slip rug is available in several different sizes and can be cut to the desired size.
